The BBC covers findings by researchers at Manchester Royal Infirmary, who for the first time have monitored the brain as it slips into unconsciousness.
Using a new imaging method known as 'Functional Electrical Impedance Tomography by Evoke Response', they found that as a patient loses consciousness after an anaesthetic injection, different parts of the brain appear to be 'talking' to each other.
It is hoped that this technique could be used to study the nature of consciousness, as well as more accurately monitoring acquired brain injury patients.
