A new review has found that family presence at the bedside of patients in neurocritical care can support positive outcomes.
The review, published in the journal Current Treatment Options in Neurology, summarised existing evidence into the impact of family being at the bedside of a loved one being treated in neurocritical care. It found that family presence promotes better satisfaction with care, reduced negative symptoms and increased self-efficacy (belief in one’s ability to do something) in families involved in the care of their loved one.
Suggestions are made for future research to focus on how families can be involved in neuro-care with minimum impairment on neuro-care workflow and standards, and how to prepare care staff in family-centred neuro-care.
