5k every day in December

Mon 05 Feb 2018

In December when the weather is dark and dreary, most of us are looking for an excuse to stay indoors and hibernate. However, Headway fundraiser Marc Raybould did the exact opposite, embarking on a new outdoor physical challenge: The ‘Marcathon’.

When Marc’s friend David underwent multiple operations to relieve the symptoms of a stage four cancer that had sadly spread to his brain, Marc was reminded of the "fragility of the brain and the importance of understanding brain injury".

Support from Headway and sharing experiences with other brain injury survivors helped David’s family and friends, such as Marc, to put things into perspective. So Marc decided to challenge himself to run 5k (just over 3 miles) every day in December to raise money for Headway, who provide support and guidance to many other people who find themselves in a similar situation.

While the majority of people were over-indulging on Christmas day, Marc still found time to run and he never shied away from the less than favourable winter weather.

He said: "I ran every day in December and this time it actually snowed, which made it a bit trickier than usual!

"Normally it's just dismal and wet. The snow was fun though as it made early mornings quiet and peaceful."

Marc did the majority of his fundraising online and drummed up incredible support from friends, family and colleagues by posting regular updates on Facebook, LinkedIn and on his JustGiving online fundraising page. He more than doubled his original fundraising target of £500.00 by raising a fantastic £1424.00 for Headway!

Marc’s commitment to the challenge was unfaltering and he has some valuable advice for people thinking about fundraising for Headway:

"My biggest tip is, don't think about it, do it.

"Friends, family, colleagues are so supportive and we spend so much time thinking about ourselves in our own little worlds, it’s good to step outside and do something for others."
