BRAW 2018: Such a brilliant weekend, bookings already coming in for 2019!

Mon 15 Oct 2018

Over one hundred brain injury survivors, family members and carers gathered from across Scotland will tell you that Headway’s BRAW, held in September 2018, lived up to its name as a fantastic weekend of activities, therapies and relaxation. BRAW stands for Best Relaxation and Activities Weekend. It’s also a Scottish word meaning ‘fine, good or pleasing.’

Thanks to the excellent facilities and accommodation at Tulliallan Police College near Kincardine, people were able to catch up with old pals and make new friends during the weekend.

The weekend began on Friday evening with welcomes from Alexander Stewart MSP, who has a long relationship with Headway, and Sgt Amanda McBride who works in Police Scotland’s Equality and Diversity Team. Over the weekend, cycling, swimming, archery and a trip to the Falkirk Wheel were all on offer. People were also able to take part in a range of craft activities and try out therapies including massage, mindfulness and reflexology. The highlight of Saturday night was BRAW’s Got Talent with entertainment from a very talented group of people!

Headway’s Network Support Manager and member of the BRAW committee Maria Burnett said: “Organising BRAW can be a challenge but it is nothing compared to the challenges brain injury survivors and their families face on a daily basis. Knowing that they are going to have a break makes all the hard work worthwhile.

“We’ve had really positive feedback from people who were able to attend and some are already booking a place for next year!

“Tulliallan is a very special place, with great facilities and accessibility. Brain injury survivors, their family members and carers have all been able to have a relaxing weekend in a friendly, supportive place with people who understand their needs.

“We have already started organising for next year – watch this space!”
