Headway fundraiser Claire Kendrick started the year with the ultimate health kick by giving up all alcohol as part of a dry January and February in memory of her best friend.

2018 marks ten years since Claire Kendrick’s close friend Brendan passed away. Brendan sustained a head injury and developed clinical depression, which sadly led to him taking his own life.

"Perhaps if Brendan had known of the help and support out there, such as the Headway helpline and the Samaritans, he might not have taken his own life," said Claire.

"If he was still with us he could have benefited from all of the fantastic support Headway offers. That's why Brendan’s family and I have championed and raised money for Headway ever since he passed away.”

So Claire kicked off a year of fundraising for Headway with a sponsored dry January and February.  Claire used social media to promote her fundraising to family and friends and also managed to get support from her work colleagues.

Although difficult at times, Claire has found the experience of giving up alcohol a positive one:

“I really have enjoyed dry January and February. It has been difficult because so many events and occasions are surrounded by alcohol. It has really highlighted how much my life was dictated by alcohol and it has allowed me to try out new activities that I love such as walking, art, cooking and running”

Claire has raised an incredible £255.00 from her dry January and February and she’s not stopping there! Later in the year she plans to organise a ‘cook off’ at work, run a half marathon and abseil down Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral in honour of her best friend Brendan.

Claire has some top tips for people considering fundraising for Headway.

“I would advise you to get in touch with Headway for support, ideas, and fundraising materials,” said Claire.

“Having support from the fundraising team was amazing; getting regular emails made me feel positive and valued which helped me to push on with the challenge.”
