The course will be available free-of-charge to all GPs as part of the organisation’s Five minutes to change your practice platform, which aims to provide time-pressured doctors with bite-sized learning modules designed to introduce a certain topic and provide guidance on where to find more in-depth information.
The screencast covers the epidemiology, symptoms, sequelae and management of ABI and addresses the topic of post-traumatic hypopituitarism.
“The often hidden effects of brain injury, which can often overlap or be confused with other conditions, can make diagnosis difficult for GPs,” said Luke Griggs, Director of Communications at Headway.
“Too often people report to our helpline difficulties in explaining the effects of their brain injury to their GP, or that their doctor does not understand or recognise the difficulties they are facing with everyday life.
“By working with the RCGP on developing this training resource, we hope to reduce the number of people slipping through the net and help GPs to ensure people receive the help and support they need.”
Dr Jonathan Leach, Joint Honorary Secretary at the RCGP, said: “We are delighted to have launched this latest addition to our online training resources.
“General practitioners by definition are required to have an understanding of a wide range of conditions, and keeping up-to-date remains a significant challenge when their time is severely and increasingly limited.
“The Five minutes to change your practice concept allows us to provide GPs with introductions and updates to certain conditions, while directing them to further information.
“We are extremely grateful to Headway for its support in developing this resource which we hope will assist GPs in identifying brain injury in their patients and ensuring they are directed to appropriate support.”
About the RCGP’s online training platform
The Online Learning Environment (OLE) is the RCGP’s flagship platform for delivering online educational courses, updates and certifications. It was launched in April 2009 and, to date, has been accessed by over 107,000 GPs, GP trainees and other healthcare professionals.
It hosts a range of content including the Essential Knowledge Updates programme, the eLearning components of RCGP certifications as well as a variety of stand-alone educational courses developed with a range of partners.
The OLE is a highly regarded product by both members and non-members. It has been integrated with the Clarity & RCGP Appraisal Toolkit for GPs, so that GPs can automatically record their completed learning activity in their online CPD log at the click of a button.
The new course is only available to GPs who are registered with the RCGP's OLE. Please tell your GP about this new resource to help spread the word!
