Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland Headway, also known as Headway Leicester, is the only local charity supporting individuals and their families affected by brain injury.
Michael Condon, who has been volunteering with Headway Leicester for just nine months has been on a fundraising mission and dyed his hair on 30.05.20 (which was also also his birthday!) to raise vital funds so the charity can support local brain injury survivors virtually by Zoom.
Supporters donated whilst pledging which new hair colour they would like, with blue being the winner! The generosity of the public has been incredible helping Michael raise a staggering £3539, surpassing his original target of £1350.
All the funds raised will allow Headway Leicester to continue to provide vital support at their Digital Day Centre, offering various sessions including interactive sessions such as drawing, cooking and crafts. Being able to see people over Zoom will help the charity to assess their members and clients better.
Services Director Mary Goulty said: “We will be able to see their body language, appearance and even their environment. This will allow us to complete better safeguarding and wellbeing checks by being able to speak to them and see them at the same time. There are also the benefits to mental wellbeing, reduction of social isolation, mental stimulation and promoting independence."
Ruth Johnson, Fundraising and Events Officer at Headway Leicester, said: “We are overwhelmed at how committed Michael has been to this cause, with our face-to-face services currently paused due to COVID-19 we know our members have been struggling with the lack of routine and are missing their friends, the launch of our Digital Day Centre also coincided with the start of Volunteers Week. Volunteers like Michael are vital in our work at Headway and make such a difference to our organisation. He has gone above and beyond and we are extremely grateful for all he is doing to help us navigate this uncertain time for all of us”.
For more than 30 years Headway Leicestershire, based on Hospital Close, has been supporting survivors and their families to come to terms with the devastating effects of brain injury - and promises to continue to do so during these difficult and uncertain times and even when our doors are currently closed.
