Despite the charity’s own financial struggles, Headway Surrey has been tireless in its effort to continue supporting those affected by the devastating consequences of brain injury.
After the closure of the day centre on North Road, Guildford, members of staff and volunteers were quick to transform all the services on offer to ensure that brain injury survivors and their loved ones could still count on the support of Headway Surrey from afar.
From virtual art classes and online quizzes to welfare calls and a helpline, Headway Surrey has gone above and beyond to reassure members that although the day centre has had to close, the support on offer remains as unwavering as ever.
Brain injury survivors can take advantage of daily or weekly telephone calls and one-to-one video calls to access support, discuss any worries and chat to a friendly member of staff. Headway Surrey is also operating a helpline for people affected by brain injury in the local area.
As for the social side, the charity has made sure there’s lots of activities on offer to keep members engaged and motivated during isolation. Brain injury survivors can get involved with quizzes, activity packs, virtual coffee mornings, art classes and much more.
Sonja Freebody, Headway Surrey’s Chief Executive, said: “At Headway Surrey, we know just how complex and life-changing the effects of a brain injury can be, so it’s of critical importance that we’re on hand to support our service users in any way possible.
“Through remote and virtual support, we’re working hard to minimise the effects of isolation that could be so destructive to the wellbeing of our service users.”
But like many other charities across the world right now, the coronavirus outbreak has had an undeniable impact on Headway Surrey’s finances and the charity is now appealing for support.
Sonja said: “The financial impact of the coronavirus cannot be understated. We lost approximately 50% of our fundraising income overnight, which in turn has the potential to cause disruption to our services now and long into the future.
“We need your support now more than ever before. We’re asking people across the county not to forget about the charities working tirelessly through these unprecedented times.
“Every pound donated will go directly towards supporting those affected by brain injury in and around Surrey. Help us to help those affected by brain injury by donating whatever you can.”
