Headway Wearside’s You and Me project, which provided a range of activities including art-based therapies such as the popular craft and cookery sessions, has had to come to a temporary stop following the closure of the day centre.
From social get togethers and charity fundraisers to tutor-led cooking and art classes, the charity had big plans to make the project a roaring success. Sadly, all these plans have been put on hold for the foreseeable future.
But the team at Headway Wearside refuse to let this setback stop them from supporting those most in need.
The project has since been replaced with a remote service which enables brain injury survivors to showcase their creative flair through drawing, cooking and more – all from within their own homes.
The charity, based on Springwell Road, has been sending out arts and crafts supplies and recipe cards to help brain injury survivors get creative.
Kim Hunter, the charity’s Business and Community Development Officer, said: “Being creative is a great way to express our thoughts and feelings, and during a time where we may be shut off from the outside world and our friends and family, this is more important than ever.
“The You and Me project, funded by People’s Health Trust, has only been running since February so to have a big setback this early on is certainly disheartening.
“But while we may not be able to provide the vast range of activities and sessions originally outlined within the project, we will do everything we can to keep the service running.
“Thankfully, we have been able to adapt the cookery and craft sessions so they can take place in people’s homes with our guidance and support.
“The health and wellbeing of our members always has, and always will be our top priority. Headway Wearside will do everything in its power to continue supporting those most in need during these uncertain and often lonely times.”
The charity has also set up a dedicated activity group on Facebook where service users can come together to take part in virtual activities such as an online coffee morning, chat to one and other and get information.
As for the future? Kim said: “We hope to get the You and Me project up and running again in its entirety as soon as it’s safe to do so. In the meantime, we rely on the generous support of our fundraisers and donors to continue the provision of our services.”
