Ben was involved in a collision over the weekend which has left him critically ill in hospital. The 31-year-old athlete is in a coma having suffered a fractured skull and several brain haemorrhages.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ben, his family and friends at this difficult time” said Peter McCabe, Chief Executive of Headway. “Ben is a talented athlete who has reached the pinnacle of athletics, having represented Wales and Great Britain in one of the most challenging athletic disciplines. We hope the strength he has shown in his athletics career stands him in good stead in the new battle he faces.
“When it comes to brain injury, we know all too well that the relief of survival can often be replaced by the fear of the future and the uncertainty that now faces Ben and his loved ones. But support is available, whether it is via our confidential helpline, our award-winning information services and indeed through the wider Headway community.”
Ben is the Welsh record holder for decathlon and has represented Wales and Great Britain multiple times most notably at Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Glasgow and Australia.
In October 2020, Ben escaped serious injury in another bike crash. At the time, he credited his cycle helmet for lessening the severity of his injury.
