Michelle Kelly, 52, won the Carer of the Year Award – sponsored by Barr Ellison LLP during a glittering awards ceremony at the Landmark Hotel, London on 9 December.
The national awards programme, run by UK-wide charity Headway – the brain injury association, celebrates the outstanding achievements and contributions of people with brain injuries and those working to support them.
Michelle Kelly said: “I don’t do this for any other reason than it’s what needs to be done. If I can help just one person, then I’ll do it. I was very surprised to find out I had been nominated!
“Headway Sefton has been there for us from the first day the charity opened its doors. We are like one big family, and I’m so grateful for the support network I have through Headway.”
Michelle and her partner Tommy had been together for just a few years when on a work’s night out in December 2011, Tommy slipped on a patch of ice on the road. He hit the ground with such force that he sustained a life-changing traumatic brain injury.
Tommy underwent an operation to release the pressure on his brain and spent three long months in a coma. When he was finally discharged from hospital after two and a half years, Tommy found himself needing to use a wheelchair, and unable to speak or care for himself.
He now deals with the lasting effects of his brain injury, including language difficulties and fatigue.
Michelle stood by Tommy, even employing two army physicians, Steve Cairns and Si Squires, to try and help him learn how to walk again.
She was nominated for Carer of the Year by a fellow volunteer at Headway Sefton, Catherine Johnston, who described Michelle as “a shining example of authentic love”.
As well as caring for Tommy, Michelle has managed to hold down a full-time job whilst also looking after their respective families and has a voluntary role at local brain injury charity Headway Sefton.
Luke Griggs, Headway’s Chief Executive, said: “You cannot fail to be moved by Michelle’s generosity. Her selfless determination to help Tommy navigate life after brain injury is incredible.
“As well as supporting Tommy, Michelle is always there to help everyone else, whether that’s through volunteering at Headway Sefton or by supporting her extended family. Michelle is an inspiration to us all.
“We are so pleased to present this award to her and to show our appreciation for all the wonderful things she does for everyone around her.”Back
