Hard Hat Awareness Week: Is construction industry prioritising head safety?

Mon 12 Jun 2023

Can the construction industry learn lessons from contact sports, like rugby and football, to protect workers from head injuries?

Each year, Hard Hat Awareness Week drives awareness of brain injury through activities designed to encourage best practice around safety equipment.

Information is also provided to improve knowledge of what to do if a brain injury does occur.

Construction sites without the correct protection can potentially be very dangerous places, especially when it comes to head injuries.

Brain injury is more common than you think, and its impact can be life-changing for both the individual hurt but also their wider family. Ensuring your head protection is worn and cared for correctly is key to remaining safe.

How can construction protect workers from head injuries?

Ahead of Hard Hat Awareness Week from 12-18 June, a panel of experts discussed the issues concerning worker safety on construction sites. Please click here to read the full discussion, chaired by CM editor Will Mann and show your support by sharing the hashtag: #HHAW23.

Colin Morris, Director of Communications of Headway said: “There is growing evidence of the short and long-term damage that can be caused by even a single knock to the head, so we are delighted to support Hard Hat Awareness Week in reminding people of the importance of wearing hard hats and taking any impact to the head seriously.

“It is important that construction workers recognise the signs of concussion, stop to report the incident and recover fully before returning to work.”
