The concept of this vocational provision was developed and launched by Headway Tyneside’s clinical trustees and staff in 2021. The early service delivery model delivered vocational training to groups of learners. However, with achieving better outcomes in mind, the model was revised and a new 1:1 vocational rehabilitation service launched in autumn 2022.
We are NHS-commissioned to provide brain injury vocational rehabilitation services. The stated aims are to:
- Facilitate the acquisition or improvement of skills and behaviour appropriate to the workplace
- Enhance individuals’ potential to achieving a positive outcome i.e., employment, training/education, or voluntary work
- Assist clients to overcome interpersonal, social, or work-related difficulties
- Support clients and their families with the psychological and emotional effects of brain injury, to adjust to daily life.
Headway2Work (Headway Tyneside) is contracted to deliver services to a specific number of people per year, as set out in the contract we have with the NHS. Whilst we are meeting our contractual obligations with regards to the number of individuals who benefit from our service, the real impact can be told through our client’s stories.
We have worked collaboratively with other regional Headway groups to ensure their members can benefit from this service, for example through delivering a 5-week brain injury education course for Headway Darlington members. This was extremely well-received.
Since launching the bespoke 1-1 vocational rehabilitation programme in Autumn 2022, we have successfully been re-commissioned for 2023-24, and are already close to fulfilling our contracted numbers, having developed a secure referral pipeline thanks to effective working relationships with local community therapy teams and Headway groups.
“The facilitator was fantastic at explaining what can be a very complicated subject. I learnt so much from this course.”
“Every single thing on the course has been relevant – it has all resonated with me. I thought my injury was just frontal lobe, but it’s ‘everything’ – there’s nothing you’ve said where I haven’t thought… ‘that’s me!’ Thank you.”
“Headway2work arrived in my life at probably around the time I was at my lowest. After the stroke… I needed someone to tell me ‘everything will be alright.’ After meeting Headway2work my confidence began to return gradually. I started to see a future back at work. Each meeting was looked forward to and I felt each one provided a positive outcome for me as an individual. The thought of returning to work was petrifying but my therapist helped ease those feelings.”
