After recovering from a brain injury which he sustained in 2010, Charlie Rickett is taking on quite a unique challenge to help raise awareness of brain injury and support those affected.

In March 2010 Charlie sadly sustained a brain injury following a fall whilst at a ski resort. “At the time I and everyone around me were completely unaware of the impact of what would follow” Charlie said.

He had hit the back of his head so hard that he had a six inch crack in his skull and was left with a hematoma between the brain and skull itself. Charlie talks about a new journey beginning that very day, and the changes he and his family battled through:

“My family were the most affected as I remained blissfully unaware of my personality change and what that was doing to myself and those around me. To say that we went through some dark times would be an understatement”.

Headway HelmetNow seven years on, Charlie feels incredibly grateful that he and his family have come through it relatively unscathed. Feeling that other people have not been so fortunate, Charlie has decided to take on the challenge of a 24 hour Go Kart race as a solo driver, to raise money and awareness for Headway. Check out the fantastic pictures of the helmet Charlie has had designed for the race!

"What I am doing is pretty ridiculous but those who know me well know that I am an all or nothing person” Charlie has said.

As you can imagine the challenge is incredibly tough, being both mentally and physically exhausting. Charlie has taken on a very strict training programme of diet and exercise which began back in January this year in order to help complete this epic challenge.

Charlie has already raised over an incredible £6,000 for Headway with this figure expected to rise still! We are hugely grateful to him for his support and the awareness he has raised. In his own words Charlie adds:

“Brain injury can challenge every aspect of your life – walking, talking, thinking and feeling – and the losses can be severe and permanent. It can mean losing both the life you once lived and the person you once were. I feel this is an area that needs more awareness, support and funding. ”

You can help support Charlie and his incredible challenge by donating to his JustGiving page.
