Annual Awards finalists talk to BBC Radio 5Live

Tue 21 Nov 2017

In the build up to Headway's Annual Awards, BBC Radio 5Live focused part of its 5Live Daily programme on the life-changing effects brain injury can have on survivors and their families.

Presenter Adrian Chiles interviewed Headway Annual Awards finalists Natasha Cassidy and Danny Reeves.

Natasha is a finalist in the Carer of the Year category, sponsored by SweetTree Home Care Services, while Danny is up for The Alex Richardson Achiever of the Year Award, sponsored by Slater and Gordon Lawyers.

Natasha's partner Paul was left with a severe brain injury when he was assaulted when he went for a pint after work. Natasha went from being a mother-of-two who rarely left her home to being Paul's full time carer.

She started volunteering at Headway's new charity shop in Cheadle, to give something back to the charity that had supported her. She is now training to be a counsellor and wants to support other people affected by brain injury.

Danny Reeves, who was newly married to Ruth, had just celebrated the birth of their first child when he contracted encephalitis after a nasty bout of chicken pox. The couple lost their jobs and Danny was left with limited mobility, severe anxiety, depression and debilitating head pain.

Danny experienced a roller coaster of health issues for a good few years until he was finally able to reach his goal of taking part in his local park run. He now trains regularly and recently completed Cheltenham's half marathon.

Luke Griggs, Director of Communications, spoke about how brain injury can affect people's lives, particularly as a result of a change in personality. He explained how with the right help and support, there can be life after brain injury.
