Government to carry out review of carbon monoxide protection rules

Tue 01 May 2018

Headway has welcomed the announcement that the Government is to carry out a review of regulation around carbon monoxide protection and safety.

Carbon monoxide is often labelled the ‘silent killer’ because it is an invisible, odourless and tasteless gas. As well as leading to fatalities, carbon monoxide poisoning can and does leave people with life-long, permanent and severe disabilities. Even mild exposure to carbon monoxide can have a permanent effect on people.

The main symptom of carbon monoxide poisoning is tension-type headaches which may be accompanied by dizziness, nausea and vomiting, tiredness and confusion. It can be difficult to identify carbon monoxide as the cause of these symptoms and they are often confused with colds, flu or food poisoning. In cases of severe or long-term exposure, life-changing brain injury can occur.

Dr Clare Mills, Headway’s Public Affairs Manager, said: “It’s good to see the Government recognising the need for a review of existing safety rules. However more could still be done to raise awareness of the risks of carbon monoxide and improve safety.

“Headway supports the campaign run by Eddie Hughes MP to require all landlords to install CO alarms and we will continue to raise awareness of this life-saving issue.”
