Headway thanks Ryan Mason and generous Spurs fans

Headway has thanked Hull City footballer Ryan Mason, his former club Tottenham Hotspur and its fans after they raised thousands of pounds for the charity in a football shirt auction.

Ryan, a former Spurs midfielder, suffered a fractured skull while playing for Hull City against Chelsea on 22 January.

As a show of support, Ryan’s former team-mates wore special warm up t-shirts on the pitch at White Hart Lane prior to their FA Cup fourth round victory against Wycombe Wanderers on 28 January.

The shirts featured 'Get well soon Ryan' messaging on the front and 'Mason 8' on the reverse - a reference to the midfielder's most recent squad number with Spurs. The Spurs squad then signed the t-shirts and gave fans the chance to purchase them through an online charity auction.

At Ryan’s request, all proceeds raised from the auction were donated to Headway, and after a frenzy of bids from generous Spurs fans, just over £4,000 was raised for the charity.

Speaking on Twitter, Ryan said: "This means a lot to me, thank you @SpursOfficial. All funds raised are going to @HeadwayUK a fantastic charity who help those who have suffered brain injuries.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all of your continued support it really does continue to help me. Thank you."

Peter McCabe, Chief Executive of Headway – the brain injury association, said the charity was thrilled with the amount raised and repeated his thanks to Ryan and everyone connected to Tottenham Hotspur Football Club for their support.

He said: “All the money raised will go towards supporting our frontline services, such as our helpline, and helping people who are coming to terms with the consequences of brain injury.

“Thank you again to Ryan, Tottenham Hotspur and all those generous fans who bid on the shirts. ”
