Radio 5Live focuses on the hidden disability

Tue 30 Aug 2016

GB para-climber Dave Bowes took part in a special report by BBC Radio 5Live to highlight the important issue of hidden disabilities and brain injury.

After sustaining a traumatic brain injury in a motorbike accident in 2007, Dave began to experience severe behavioural changes and other often hidden effects that cost him his career and challenged his marriage.

During the interview, conducted by BBC presenter Adrian Chiles, Dave and his wife Sheema spoke about the pressure of living with a ‘hidden disability’ and how it affects relationships. They touched on a range of issues, from the difficulties diagnosing a brain injury to the effects of a lack of insight, while also addressing everyday concerns such how some brain injury survivors don’t feel 'disabled enough' to apply for a blue parking badge.

Luke Griggs, Headway’s Director of Communications, was also interviewed in the live piece. He spoke about the issue more generally, and described how the charity can offer support to people affected by brain injury.
