Selfless carer Natasha scoops national award

Fri 08 Dec 2017

A mother-of-two became a carer when her partner sustained a severe brain injury in a vicious assault has won a national award.

Natasha Cassidy, 27, was awarded the Alex Richardson Carer of the Year award sponsored by Slater and Gordon Lawyers at the Headway Annual Awards.

The glittering ceremony was held at The Dorchester Hotel, in London, on Friday 8 December.

Double-Olympic gold medallist and Headway Vice President James Cracknell presented her with the award, recognising her ongoing care for Paul and her selfless desire to help other.

In June 2015, Paul had gone for a pint after work when Natasha called to check on him. A policewoman answered and told her to go straight to Salford Royal Hospital.

Two months later, Paul returned from hospital a different man after suffering bruising and bleeding on the brain. He needed round the clock care and his personality had changed so much Natasha had to learn to love him all over again.

After receiving support from Headway's helpline and Emergency Fund, Natasha wanted to give something back and started volunteering at the charity's new shop in Cheadle, which she and Paul officially opened.

Natasha is now studying to become a counsellor, so she can support other families affected by brain injury.

The national awards ceremony celebrates the inspirational achievements of survivors of brain injury and their carers in the face of adversity, as well as the outstanding contributions individuals have made to the charity.

Peter McCabe, Chief Executive of Headway, said: "When faced with the toughest of challenges, Natasha has shown an incredible strength of spirit. Her devotion to Paul is unwavering. To take on the role of carer while looking after two small children is an immense challenge, but Natasha has taken it in her stride.

"Before Paul's brain injury she was a young woman who rarely left her house. Now she's volunteering and studying to help other people living with the devastating effects of brain injury. Not only does that show what a wonderful woman Natasha is, but also how much she has come out of her shell. She is truly deserving of this award."
